LAST week, a friend of mine posted on Facebook a photo of a compact cassette tape and a pencil, and commented that the younger generation would have no idea what the link was between the two items.
My mind immediately took a time warp back to the days when the cassette tape was considered state-of-the-art. If the spools came loose and the contents spilled out of the tape, the pencil was the perfect implement to stick through one of the spools to wind the contents back in. I'm sure that many of you are still trying to figure out what I'm talking about!

Does anyone remember the teaching of the alphabet in school, with "A" for "apple" and ending with "Z" for "zebra"?
In this digital age, using "cats", "dogs", "elephants" and "fish" to teach the alphabet is hugely passe. "A" might still be for "apple" but it'd be of the Steve Jobs variety, while "B" could be for "Bluetooth", "C" for "cloud" and "D" for "download". And the list goes on...
My friends often ask me how I relate to my 15-year-old son in this day and age, where the generation gap between parent and child seems to be greater than ever before.
PHOTO: Tweet or Die! The Deadly News.
These days it’s all about staying relevant. When I was younger not having Pokemon cards was enough to kill you socially, now you have to constantly be updating the world on your goings-on or you’re dead. In comes Twitter. Now instead of asking your friends what they are up to, you can simply “follow” their tweets and know everything there is to know.

This is a tough one, I can tell you. But I am fortunate that my son and I have one thing that binds us very closely together, and that's music.
So I am now getting around to understanding "dubstep", which is Joshua's current favourite genre. The range of bands he listens to spans from The Devil Wears Prada to As I Lay Dying. I'm not saying that all the music he indulges in is wholesome, but I find that getting in tune is the only way to qualify me to comment on his music choices and subtly shape his preferences.

While there is absolutely nothing wrong in reminiscing about the past, I must say that it's exponentially more exciting keeping in step with today's brave new world.
