Some key features of Gardens by the Bay, including one of the two conservatories - the Flower Dome (picture) - will be open to the public for a week-long sneak preview from tomorrow, in conjunction with the 20th World Orchid Conference.

The National Parks Board said the preview will help them gauge the public's interest and will be useful in its pricing strategies for tickets when the attraction officially opens in June next year.

From Singapore’s ‘Gardens by the Bay’ by Grant Associates, on July 17, 2011 in Architecture, Energy
In 2009, Grant Associates won an international design competition to plan the largest garden project ever to be constructed in Singapore, the Marina South Gardens. The structure, which is inspired by the shape of an orchid, features a group of cooled conservatories in its center as well as a series of enormous solar ‘Supertrees’ that provide the gardens with an abundant source of rain water and renewable energy.

The 18 ‘Supertrees’ will serve as towering vertical gardens that collect rainwater, generate solar power, and act as venting ducts for the conservatories. Although the gardens aren’t expected to be complete for another full year, construction is moving right along and the ‘Supertrees’ are truly a magical sight to behold.

The following information is from the architects:
“This competition-winning idea structures the design of a 54-hectare public garden on the organisation and physiology of the orchid. The orchid is the national flower of Singapore and is the most cosmopolitan species of flowering plant in the world. At the same time it is typically epiphytic or transient in its colonisation of habitats.
It seemed to us entirely appropriate, if a bit obvious, to capture the essential qualities and characteristics of orchids in the layout and underlying philosophy for these new gardens.

The sketches show a progression of the idea. First the garden takes root on a piece of new garden infrastructure and grows out towards the City. Leaves (earthworks), roots (water, energy, communication systems) and shoots (paths, roads and links) create an integrated network across the space, and beautiful flowers (feature/theme gardens) occur at key intersections or nodes.

Gustafson Porter recently received a commendation in the category Big Urban Projects at the MIPIM AR Future Projects Awards 2011 for the project Bay East, Gardens by the Bay in Singapore. Director Mary Bowman will attend the MIPIM Award ceremony on 9 March 2011 in Cannes. The Gardens aim to capture the essence of Singapore as the premier tropical Garden City with the perfect environment in which to live, work and play, re-engineering Singapore into a leading global city of the 21st century. It will complement and complete the necklace of attractions that have been planned for around the Marina...

The masterplan has evolved from these simple ideas into a highly sophisticated and integrated 3-D network of horticulture, art, engineering and architecture. It is chasing the idea of creating a highly distinctive and decorative garden landscape underpinned by serious engineering [of environmental infrastructure] and world-class garden architecture. This holistic vision is captured in the concept diagram of the garden ecosystem.

At the heart of the gardens are the ‘Supertrees’, a fusion of nature, art and technology. They are both spectacular vertical tropical gardens dripping with ferns, orchids and climbers, and the environmental engines for the gardens, equipped with photovoltaics, solar thermal collectors, rainwater harvesting devices and venting ducts. The Supertrees will support a 135m length aerial walkway, suspended 21.5m from the ground; the tallest Supertree of 50m in height will also house a bar at the top.

The Supertree studies explore part of the process of form, finding and marrying the efficiency of a structurally engineered design with the aesthetic and environmental requirements. In addition we have made 3-D prints of the structures at 1:100 scale to help fine-tune the details and to turn 3-D computer screen images into touchable objects.”

I personally like the Bay of Fires area and St Columbia Falls which makes this area quite diverse for photographers. A nice place to get a fix for waterfalls and waterscapes.
