‘Green’ club for Punggol in 2011

AFTER getting eco-friendly flats, Punggol will also have an eco-friendly community club. The $9-million community club, which will open next year, will have a system that pumps rainwater from nearby drains into tanks on its roof. The water will be used to water plants.

The club will also use energy-saving lights and air-conditioners, and have many open-air spaces, including an outdoor gym and a rooftop garden, to promote natural ventilation.

Member of Parliament for Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC, Miss Penny Low, said that the club’s management aims for it to achieve the Building and Construction Authority’s highest accolade for “green” buildings, the Green Mark Platinum award.

The club, situated beside shopping mall Punggol Plaza, will be an upgrade over the community centre that it will replace the 650 sq m Punggol 21 Community Centre, which occupies the void decks of blocks 172B and 172C, Edgedale Plains.

The centre, which opened in 2007, uses its classrooms and void-deck space to organise wellness programmes such as yoga and taiji classes, and open fields for bigger-scale events such as last year’s New Year countdown.

The new four-storey club will feature a 456 sq m multi-purpose hall that can be used for badminton and table tennis two 90 sqmdance studios, and a 206 sqm multimedia IT studio.It will also have two retail shops on its basement and ground floors, which will be linked to Punggol Plaza via linkways.

Visitorship is expected to grow from the current 300 a day to close to 1,000. Yesterday, at the club’s groundbreaking ceremony, Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean said that the current community centre could not meet the growing needs of Punggol, which is the fastest-growing new town here.

The new club will serve as a meeting place for social and recreational purposes, he said.

Mr Terrence Tan, 35, who is self-employed and lives opposite Punggol Plaza, looks forward to the opening of the club. He said: “I head down to Sengkang Community Club when I want to meet friends for a game of badminton. But when the new club opens, I’ll be sure to go there, since it’s so near.”

SYDNEY - HEAVY rains which flooded parts of Australia's vast desert centre have brought rare waterfalls spilling from the iconic monolith Uluru, or Ayers Rocks, officials said on Saturday.

The deluge, which swept across much of the continent's east after a tropical cyclone last month, prompted a wave of green in the Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, home to the giant red rock.

PHOTO: Uluru (also known as Ayres Rock) is one of the world’s largest monoliths, rising almost 1,150 feet. It is the summit of a massive underground piece of sandstone about 600 million years old. It is believed that only the top 10% is actually visible. Even though the aborigines prefer that visitors not climb the rock, about 70% attempt it.

'It's something that a lot of people actually wouldn't experience, seeing the park at this time of year when it is green and the plants are really shooting and the flowers are coming out,' said park manager Christine Burke.

Situated near the centre of the semi-arid Sturt Desert, Uluru typically receives little more than 12 inches of rain a year, and January is its hottest, driest month, with temperatures topping to 45 degrees Celsius (113 °F). Conditions are overcast, on average, just five days of the year.

'Uluru is a sacred part of Aboriginal tribes' creation mythology and one of the nation's most recognisable landmarks. Australia is currently mulling a ban on climbing the rock on cultural and safety grounds. Signs at the site ask people not to climb it out of respect for the Aboriginal community, but one-third of the 350,000 annual visitors still do so.

Depression is often seen as a woman’s problem, mainly because twice as many women than men are diagnosed with the disorder.

PHOTO: Many women are also particularly vulnerable after the birth of a baby. The hormonal and physical changes, as well as the added responsibility of a new life, can be factors that lead to postpartum depression in some women.

But that is because men are less likely to admit that anything is wrong, and because depression looks different in men than it does in women.

Rather than becoming sad, men may become irritable or fatigued. Depression causes them to doubt their self-worth. They may also suffer headaches or insomnia.

Men need to know that depression is not a weakness and it is nothing to be ashamed of. Once diagnosed, it is highly treatable.

If you suspect that the man in your life is depressed, encourage him to seek professional counseling. Do not nag but be persistent.

Most men may say that nothing is wrong but deep inside they probably know that they need help.

Tiger Year 2010

Year 2010 is the year of the metal tiger. The tiger is already well known for being fierce, stubborn and bad-tempered. According to feng shui master, this is going to be a dangerous time for everybody, especially when the tiger crash with the heavenly god of the year. There are sixty of them.

Everything on earth, ranging from law (disputes), health (sickness), wealth (misfortunes), studies (schools shutdown), career (retrenchment), and love (peach blossom) will face tremendous difficulties.

The raging tiger is out to attack and heaven turn loose to pour its wrath on earth. Everywhere will be covered with misery and poverty that surmount the little comforts left after the deep recessions.

Global coldness reign in the hearth of human species on earth. Those born in the year of the tiger will face waves of problems after problems throughout their whole life. The feng shui masters are ready very pessimistic this time, but are we to be so demoralized?

According to earlier predictions and analysis, the tiger is a good match and has good relationship with the zodiac Horse, dragon and dog. The zodiac snake, ox, monkey and rabbit will have conflicts with the tiger.

The three fortunate zodiac animals may have some immunity from the fierce anger of the tiger but not for long. There are bound to be unexpected circumstances to cause misunderstandings and conflicts.

Love may be able to overcome many of such problems. Having loving relationship with the tigers could be the only solutions to all the wars and deaths. This little protection is a matter of live and being torn to pieces.
