MOSCOW - It was an Ice Age squirrel's treasure chamber, a burrow containing fruit and seeds that had been stuck in the Siberian permafrost for more than 30,000 years.

From the fruit tissues, a team of Russian scientists managed to resurrect an entire plant in a pioneering experiment that could pave the way to the possible resurrection of Ice Age mammals.

"If we are lucky, we can find some frozen squirrel tissue," said Dr Stanislav Gubin, one of the authors of the study.

"And this path could lead us all the way to mammoth."

The Silene stenophylla is the oldest plant ever to be regenerated, the researchers said, and it is fertile, producing white flowers and viable seeds. Canadian researchers had earlier regenerated some significantly younger plants from seeds found in burrows.

The Russian experiment proves that permafrost serves as a natural depository for ancient life forms, said the researchers, who published their findings in yesterday's issue of the United States journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

The Russian research team recovered the fruit after investigating dozens of fossil burrows hidden in ice deposits on the right bank of the lower Kolyma River.

The sediments, dating back 30,000 to 32,000 years, were firmly cemented together and often totally filled with ice, making any water infiltration impossible - creating a natural freezing chamber fully isolated from the surface.

"The squirrels dug the frozen ground to build their burrows, which are about the size of a soccer ball, putting in hay first and then animal fur for a perfect storage chamber," said Dr Gubin, who spent years rummaging through the area for squirrel burrows. "It's a natural cryobank (A place of storage that uses very low temperatures to preserve semen or transplantable tissues)."

The burrows were located 38m below the present surface in layers containing bones of large mammals, such as mammoth, wooly rhinoceros, bison, horse and deer.

Japanese scientists are already searching in the same area for mammoth remains, but Dr Gubin hopes that the Russians will be the first to find some frozen animal tissue that could be used for regeneration.

"It's our land, we will try to get them first," he said.

Svetlana Yashina from the Russian Academy of Sciences grew the plants from immature fruits recovered from the burrow. She extracted their placentas – the structure that the seeds attach to – and bathed them in a brew of sugars, vitamins and growth factors. From these tissues, roots and shoots emerged.

Yashina potted the plants and two years later, they developed flowers. She fertilised the ancient flowers with each other’s pollen, and in a few months, they had produced their own seeds and fruits, all viable. The frozen plants, blooming again after millennia in the freezer, seeded a new generation.

S.stenophylla’s resurrection shows how many treasures lie buried within the world’s permafrost. This soil, defined as that which stays below freezing for two years or more, covers a fifth of the planet’s land. It is home to bacteria, algae, fungi, plants and more. In the fossil burrows that Yashina has studied, scientists have found up to 600,000 to 800,000 seeds in individual chambers.

Update: The lead author, David Gilichinsky passed away on 18 February, just two days before his final paper was published.

Right in the heart of Orchard Road lies a flora and fauna treat that provides shade and sanctuary, and also gives a sneak preview of what’s in store at Asia’s No 1 garden and flower show.

Located at the junction of Orchard Road and Cairnhill Road till July 22, the 12-by-12-metre garden boasts unique plants and flowers.

It is also home to the three Singapore Garden Festival (SGF) mascots, Lindy Ladybug, Gary Grasshopper and Benny Bee.

喜爱胡姬花的陈伟民（26岁）从小开始栽种胡姬花，家里的胡姬花数量曾有350盆之多。
Lover of Orchid's flower, Chen Weimin (26 years), since began planting orchid, accummulated as many as 350 pots.

家门前的空间不够，陈伟民只好“借”邻居的走廊摆放。邻居非但不介意，还发挥守望相助的精神，在半夜听到走廊有动静时，会起床查看是否有人来偷胡姬花。

Even so, it is still hard to prevent stealing of the flowers. Several times, flower thieves manage to steal Chen Weimin's difficult to plant orchids. So Chen Weimin put the more expensive orchid species locked in an iron cage, so that thieves do not have the possibility to break in.

陈伟民的第一盆胡姬花是小学六年级时在pasar malam（夜市）购买的。这盆平凡又便宜的蝴蝶兰品种，却让他与胡姬花结下不解之缘。
Chen Weimin's first pot of orchid is bought from the pasar malam (night market) when he was in the 6th grade. That was an inexpensive orchid species but extraordinary. He then start to develop his liking for Orchid.

陈伟民透露，胡姬花最吸引他的地方在于种类繁多，是花卉王国最大的花类，自然培植的胡姬花品种有30,000多种，而人工培植的则多达100,000多种。
Chen Weimin said orchid is most attractive to a wide range of places. It is the flower kingdom's largest flower. There are 30,000 natural orchid varieties, and as many as 100,000 varieties that are artificially propagated.

在众多品种当中，陈伟民对外表怪异脱俗的魔鬼石斛兰（Dendrobium spectabile）情有独钟。
Among the many varieties, Chen Weimin is specially fond of the strange appearance of the devil Dendrobium (Dendrobium spectabile).

他说：“当别的男生沉迷于电脑游戏的时候，我却在疯狂地收集胡姬花。这种不一般的兴趣，让我觉得我和魔鬼石斛兰很相像。”
He said: "While the other boys are addicted to computer games, I am crazy into collecting orchid. This is not just with the normal interest, I think I and the devil Dendrobium are very similar."

求学时期，陈伟民几乎把打临时工赚来的薪水，全都花在胡姬花上，有时甚至花上近$200购买一盆胡姬花。他笑说：“妈妈看到家里的胡姬花越来越多，还以为我疯了。”

When Chen Weimin grew up, the National Parks Board send him to Australia for studies, under a scholarship. Currently he is in National Orchid Garden as the Manager.

陈伟民坦言，他和女友刚交往时，对方曾难以接受他对胡姬花痴迷，不过如今已渐渐学会接受他的喜好。他表示，如果有机会，他会培植一个新的胡姬花品种给女友。
Wei-Min Chen admitted that when he and his girlfriend just started dating, she found it difficult to accept his orchid obsession, but now gradually learn to accept his hobby. He said that if given the opportunity, he will cultivate a new orchid species for his girlfriend.

新加坡花园节将于7月15至22日，在新达新加坡国际会议与展览中心举行。新加坡胡姬花展（Singapore Orchid Show）将是今年的重头戏之一。

这次的花展将会有一些部分以比赛方式进行，各地区代表将展出来自他们国家的胡姬花品种，让公众大开眼界。
The flower show will have certain part meant for competition. Regional representatives will display orchid varieties from their countries. It will be bound to be an eye-opener to the public.

国家胡姬园（National Orchid Garden）也将在这次的胡姬花展中展出所培植的胡姬花品种。
National Orchid Garden will also be showcasing the cultivated orchid orchid species.

国家胡姬园经理， 胡姬花达人陈伟民表示，东南亚胡姬花协会（OSSEA）是此活动的合作伙伴之一。他透露，该协会每个月都会召开会议，也会举办小型聚会让胡姬花爱好者共聚一堂，分享种植胡姬花的心得。

胡姬花培育该注意什么？
What to pay attention to in orchid cultivation?

1. 培育方法视品种而定不同品种的胡姬花需要不一样的条件来培养。有些胡姬花需要充足的阳光来生长，而有些则适合比较阴暗的地方。若把后者放在阳光下曝晒，可能会导致胡姬花夭折，而若把需要阳光的品种放在阴暗处，该胡姬花就无法健康成长。
Breeding methods are different from species to species. Different species of orchids need different conditions to develop. Some orchids need plenty of sunlight to grow, while others are more suited to dark places. If the latter is exposed to strong sunlight the orchid may died, but if those that need the sun is placed in the shadow all the while, the orchids cannot grow up healthily.

此外，浇水的次数也应根据品种而定。长在炭或砖块上的品种需每天浇一到两次的水；由于泥土比较容易保存水分，种在泥土里的胡姬花则只需要每天浇一次水。
