Samba dancers turn up the heat at Rio's carnival

The wild four-day celebration, which started on Saturday, happens exactly 40 days before Easter and is an "act of farewell to the pleasures of the flesh", says the Rio Carnival Services website. The festivities finish on Tuesday, just before Ash Wednesday which is the commencement of Lent.

An estimated 500,000 to 700,000 foreign tourists are in town to take part, and to witness this amazing event of colourful sights and sounds.
