PHUKET FAMILY PARTY

I hardly know anyone in Singapore who has not been to Phuket. I’ve already been to the island four times, and going there almost seems to be a Singaporean traveller’s rite of passage.

Yet it remains a crowd pleaser, with an aura that draws people to revisit again and again.

Phuket is definitely a place that gets big groups in a good mood, because there really is something for everyone.

I experienced this with family and friends recently when we stayed in the district of Cherng Talay, a quaint little area located conveniently close to the airport.

It is full of hip little restaurants and shops among the ubiquitous street markets and foodstalls that line the winding lanes.

The resort we chose, outrigger Laguna Phuket, is part of a gated community, sharing facilities with other well-known properties such as Dusit Thani and Banyan Tree Phuket.

It was perfectly private and had all the amenities we wanted in one area: private beach, huge lake, golf, small pedestrian mall, riding club and even a wedding chapel.

The great thing about revisiting a place you’ve already fallen in love with is that it gives you opportunities to do things you might have skipped before.

One of the first things we did this time was to stop at a nearby village temple to pay our respects and give alms to the monks on Vesak Day, the reason we were enjoying a long weekend holiday.

I had initially expected glorious chanting and some kind of fanfare that morning, but the only people there were our small party and a barefoot monk, who received our offerings of rice and vegetables graciously, and blessed us quietly in Sanskrit.

Our conveniently located villa was also a perfect base from which we could set out for various pursuits, yet still enjoy the comforts of home.

Mornings would see us jumping into our sizeable private pool, and then making breakfast or preparing lunch in the fully equipped kitchen.

But, of course, it was far better than being at home. Our three-bedroom villa overlooked a small stream and had an open pavilion, where we could lounge while staff prepared a barbecue for our dinner.

ELEPHANTS AND SPA PRODUCTS, OH MY!

Personally, I find travel a great opportunity to give back to the local community.

As a visitor, one often consumes without thinking about giving back. But with a little research, one can always find groups that benefit from one’s patronage in a non-commercial way.

Siam Safarian eco-tourism outfit running safari tours, is one such group.

Operating out of a few destinations in Thailand, Siam Safari channels its funds towards animal care and giving jobs to locals.

My little group chose to do an elephant trek. It happened on a rainy afternoon, but that did not stop the six of us, including my hubby and baby, from going right ahead after donning rain gear.

The great thing about Siam Safari is that it really walks the talk when it comes to animal conservation. Its elephants are obviously well-cared for, and the group’s projects also include the running of animal hospitals and mobile clinics.

It also took a great deal of effort to give us facts on local village life, with the aim of helping to sustain the community and culture.

Shopping also became an act of caring at Lemongrass House, a Phuket-based spa-products company. Its store in Laguna is made of shipping containers, painted in their trademark lime green.

Inside the shop, a treasure trove of lovely essential oils, organic and all-natural bath and body products, and home fragrances awaits.

Lemongrass House also has special lines for children, expectant mothers and pets.

The owner and founder of the company, Mr Bobby Duchowny, showed me how products are hand-blended in the “lab” section of the store.

With a background in aromatherapy, he was inspired to create the brand when he fell in love and married his Thai wife. Four years later, 40 members of her family were employed in the business, working in organic farms and hand-blending the various products.

LIFE’S A BEACH

Phuket is always a stand-out destination for beach-time fun. We chartered a private speedboat for a more personal experience. There is simply nothing like the wind in your hair and the sun in your face as you really kick back with your own party and have no one else to cramp your style. We took our time, snorkelled at the best spots and just sped around for half a day.

Looking back, the five-day trip was a perfect experience.

Rested and rejuvenated, we ended our break with a deep tan, warm memories and a keen intention of returning to Phuket sometime soon.

And we know that’s a promise that’s going to be very easy to keep.

My father was not by my mother's bedside when I was born. Disappointed as they both might have been, he made up for his absence that day, by showing me the ways of life and imparting important values in the years thereafter.

My father was strict and had a temper. I remember crying a lot as he tried, in frustration, to teach me algebra.

In college, he issued me an ultimatum to improve my promotional year examination results, failing which I would have to quit competitive sports.

Yet he was also kind and thoughtful. He sent me to school every day. When I was overseas, he sent me birthday, festive and even Valentine's Day cards (a task now delegated to my husband).

As adults, our views and thinking may well differ. Nevertheless, we enjoy each other's company and remain close.

Above all, he is a good man. I am grateful for his provision, enabling me to grow up relatively well-adjusted.

Many fathers of those in my generation are regarded as "traditional". Generally much less involved than their wives in the domain of childcare and housework, they are silent men who see feeding the family as their primary duty.

The national movement - Dads For Life - aims to increase a father's involvement with his children.

A young father who may have felt that his own dad could have been a better role model need not look back with regret on his own childhood.

Instead, he should take charge of his own life and ask: Can I be a better dad than my father was?

Bonding takes time, effort and even creative ideas. Fathers need to spend a lot of time with their children. They should read, talk with and listen to them; play sports, go for walks, or simply eat ice-cream out of a tub on the couch.

They should enjoy meals with their children at the dinner table at home, a table more valuable than any multi-million-dollar roundtable.

As a mother of two young boys, I fully appreciate the help of a hands-on father.

My husband is my children's resident bed-time storyteller, mega-blocks construction adviser, playmate, diapering machine, milk bottle washer, disciplinarian and hero.

I would owe my husband a big debt if he successfully exerts a strong positive influence on the future fathering aspirations and journeys of our sons. Surely, my future grandchildren will benefit.

Active, positive and mindful fathering will gain a man rewarding experiences that cannot be bought for all the money in the world. And the father will be happier for it.

A MENACING looking “baby T-Rex”, measuring 2.13m tall and 5m long, caused both fright and laughter outside The Heeren on Tuesday.

The “T-Rex” is actually a suit that manoeuvres and roars like the real thing when donned by a performer.

It is one of 20 “dinosaurs” that are part of the Walking With Dinosaurs, The Arena Spectacular show, which will be on from Dec 1 at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.

Have the foresight of a content fisherman

Since I started writing for this newspaper more than two years ago, I have been encouraged by readers who say that the stories I related helped them.

I am grateful to readers who have sent me inspirational anecdotes.

One such example that I will relate is a story about a young businessman and a fisherman.

Complimenting the fisherman on the quality of his catch, the businessman asked how long it took to haul in the fish.

“Only a little while,” the fisherman replied.

The young man asked: “Why didn’t you stay out longer and catch more?”

The content fisherman said: “This is enough to support my family’s needs. I don’t need any more.”

“But what do you do with the rest of your time?”

“I sleep late, fish a little, play with my children, take a walk with my wife, stroll into the village each evening where I sip wine and play guitar with my buddies. I have a full and busy life.”

The young chap scoffed: “I have a Harvard MBA and can help you. Spend more time fishing and, with the proceeds from your catch, buy a bigger boat.

“Using the proceeds earned from hauling in more fish with the bigger boat, you can buy several boats and, eventually, own a fishing fleet.

“Instead of selling your catch to a middleman, you can sell the fish directly to a processor, and open your own cannery eventually.

"You will then be in control of the product, processing and distribution.

“You will have to leave this small village and move to a city to run your expanding enterprise.

"This will take 15 to 20 years.”

The fisherman asked: “But what then?”

“That’s the best part. When the time is right, you announce an IPO, sell your company’s stock and become very rich.”

“Then what?”

“Then you would retire, move to a small village where you would sleep late, fish a little, play with your kids, take a walk with your wife, stroll to the village in the evenings and sip wine and play guitar with your buddies.”

You see, when we rush to fulfill our financial goals, we sometimes do not realise that we already have what we hope to achieve at the end of the day.

While it is true that this does not apply to all, for some of us, the “roses” were already there at the start.

Perhaps we have been too busy scaling up the career ladder to notice the roses strewn across our path.

It is sad when I hear of people who fail to reach their intended destinations, and who chalk up a host of health complications and disappointments along the way.
