Violinist gets rare violin
SINGAPOREAN violinist Tang Tee Khoon, 25, is the new recipient of a rare Guadagnini violin under the National Arts Council's (NAC) instrument loan scheme.

Other promising musicians who wish to play a fine instrument can also do so in the future, as the council is setting up a $1-million seed fund to acquire new stringed instruments to loan out.

Called the Singapore Musical Instrument Bank, it matches dollar for dollar donations made by corporations and individuals. Private instrument collectors are invited to donate their instruments to the bank.

Tang takes over the instrument from US-based Singaporean violinist Siow Lee Chin, who was the first beneficiary of the scheme and who played it for eight years.

The US$430,000 (S$648,000) violin was acquired in 2000 with contributions from the Far East Organization, the Lee Foundation and the NAC.

NAC's Guadagnini violin was crafted by J.B. Guadagnini in Milan in 1750.

It will be loaned to Tang for two years until May 2011. The loan period may be renewed, depending on the new round of applications in two years' time.

NAC chief executive Lee Suan Hiang said at a press conference yesterday that the violin loan scheme helps young musicians here achieve their full potential.

He said: 'We want them to excel internationally, and to do that, they need more than talent. They need a good instrument to help them produce the best sounds and great tonal colours.'

On Tang's accomplishments, he said: 'She is an accomplished young violinist. She is on the verge of a promising professional career and has won accolades in different parts of the world.'

The next Stefanie Sun?

Chinese pop singer Meixin's debut album is the culmination of three years' work. "That I can actually come up with this album is a big achievement," she said. "As I was always in China and Taiwan filming, I didn't have time to get into the studio. I'd be filming for one week before I could record some songs. So I'd be shuttling from China to Singapore. It's tiring, but you get used to it."

A plus for Meixin is that she managed to get her original composition, Because I Love You, on the album. "That's my first song. It's drawn from a bit of my life and the people I know," she said.

"I used to write songs, but not all of them were very good. This is a simple song, but I think that makes it easier for people to remember. Besides, it's the first time I'm doing this."

Meixin said her dream is to collaborate with her idol, local superstar Stefanie Sun.

"She's one of Singapore's biggest stars. I think her songs are really great. I love her albums and her songs really touch me. If I could cover her songs, that would be great. But then again, she's already done them so well, how can I compete with that?"

Loving you, by Chen Meixin (陈美心)
It has taken some time, about three years, but homegrown Mandarin singer Chen Meixin has finally released her first album.

PHOTO: Macy Chen Mei Xin (陈美心)
http://asiangirls88.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/Macy-Chen-Mei-Xin-%C3%A9%E2%84%A2%CB%86%C3%A7%C2%BE%C5%BD%C3%A5%C2%BF%C6%92-4.jpg

According to the singer, it took so long because she could only record in between filming commitments, she starred in TV offerings such as The Illusionist, Dear Dear Son-In-Law, Guangdong Master and the subway drama, A Starry Night; as well as hosting shows such as Way To Go and On The Beat 2.

She’s shifting gears to concentrate on her music career. For now, at least. And judging by this album, it’s a career that could possibly see her in good stead.

Vocally, Meixin sits somewhere in between Kit Chan and Stefanie Sun, slightly less depth than the former, but with more emotion than the latter.

Loving You isn’t her first release though. In 2007, she released her EP, In An Instant, which was produced by renown music producer Lee Wei Song.

This album kind of builds on that: All the songs here are ballads that allow her to show off her full vocal range. Because I Love You, Finally Realised and Leave have just the right amount of musical empathy from the up-and-coming star.

True, it’s not all polished, but a diamond in the rough is still a diamond.

And if she continues to put her shoulder to the wheel, Meixin will surely get there.

Girl Power - Female singer-songwriters come to the fore

Female singer-songwriters come to the fore

WHETHER it’s Joni Mitchell, Kate Bush, Suzanne Vega, Tori Amos, Alicia Keys or Rachael Yamagata, female singer-songwriters have somehow always managed to fire our imagination more so than their male counterparts (barring, perhaps, Bob Dylan).

Maybe it’s the way they can somehow evoke more emotion in their delivery, or the way they make their voice as malleable as their musical styles; or maybe they just write better songs.

Whatever the case may be, there’ll always be a place in our hearts for the woman who’s not afraid to eviscerate her innermost feelings and put them into song. Which is why we at Today were more than happy to speak to women who have made a mark in the music scene both overseas and in Singapore.

ALARICE THIO
Born in New Zealand, Alarice (pronounced air-lerreese) Thio is truly a “woman of the world”, having grown up in various countries around the world including India, UAE, Indonesia, Japan, Singapore and Australia, where she’s lived for eight years now.

She says she still feels Singaporean though — “My parents are Singaporean and my extended family is all here, only my brother is in Australia,” she said — and hopes to be able to play her music all around the region.

Her first EP, Songs For A Season (2008) was released to fair reviews and now she’s upped the ante with her second release, Sunday Afternoon, which was launched earlier this month. So far, the reception has been positive.

Her gig at the Esplanade last night was sold out, but fans can still catch her at Oosh this Sunday afternoon — no pun intended.

So what are the songs about?
The single Sunday Afternoon, I call my Jason Mraz-y, Colbie Caillat-y song — a happy, upbeat, cheeky song about a girl liking a guy but him not getting it. The other songs are about my life experiences and about my faith as well.

Some singer-songwriters need a ‘cabin in the woods’ to write. What about you?
Er, a lot of my songwriting usually takes place in the bathroom — but not when I’m doing any business! It’s because the bathroom acoustics are great for natural reverb, it’s almost like a karaoke room. And I think it sounds good, you tend to sing better and get better songs. At least I think so. I choose to write when I have a feeling that I need to get out.

You’re not comfortable on stage. True?
I still have stage fright. Yes, I’ve been doing this for a few years but it’s always good to have a bit of butterflies in the stomach, right? It motivates you. You need a bit of adrenaline, right? But no, it’s not easy for me to be onstage. Yes, I know it’s a contradiction, like why am I singing when I don’t like being onstage, right?

So, why should someone watch your show?
People say I sound a lot better live than on CD. When you do live, you get to share your stories with the audience, which you don’t get on the CD.
