The streets of Tokyo’s Asakusa district come alive with fabulous floats and vibrant dancers, shimmying their way to the Latino sounds of Japan’s version of the Rio Carnival. Samba groups from all over Japan (and some from Brazil too) twirl and gyrate in front of the Sensoji temple gates, one of Tokyo’s oldest and most revered temples. The unusual mix of South America meets the East is a spectacular sight to see.

When is the Asakusa Samba Carnival?

Usually the last Saturday in August, the 2011 Samba Carnival (which has been held every year since 1981) has sadly been cancelled for the first time ever.

The 2011 Tohoku earthquake forced planners to push Tokyo’s famous Sumida River fireworks display to August 27th which also happened to be the day of the Samba Carnival. Because the fireworks are considered more important, the Samba Carnival has been cancelled.

Asakusa Samba Carnival.

I don't normally think about Japan and a Brazilian Samba Carnival together, but that's what happens every summer in Japan’s version of the Rio Carnival in the Asakusa district of Tokyo. Almost 5000 participants paraded through the streets of Asakusa in wild, sexy and sometimes strange costumes. This year (2010) was the 30th anniversary of the Asakusa Samba Carnival.

One of the reasons for a Japanese Samba Carnival is that Japan and Brazil have had a long connection with Brazil having the largest population of Japanese outside of Japan because of the over 200,000 Japanese farmers who moved to Brazil to work on the coffee plantations in the early 1900's.

PHOTO: Asakusa Samba Festival Held on the last Saturday in August, the Asakusa Samba Festival is a carnival that's perfect during a hot Tokyo summer..This Tokyo style samba festival is a relatively new addition to the Japanese calendar. The first carnival was held on August 29, 1981 to celebrate the long standing ties between Brazil and Japan.There are usually 30 - 40 dance teams taking part in the Asakusa Samba Festival, with the winning team of the Rio de Janeiro carnival for the year also invited to take part. The dance teams are divided into 3 leagues. The top league is made up of all the professional dancers and musicians who will be competing during the Grand Parade.
